Ohio Insurance Requirements
Ohio has specific requirements depending on whether you're running interstate or staying within state lines. Intrastate carriers need PUCO authority - a step many agents don't know about.
| Your Operation | Minimum Liability | Authority Needed |
|---|---|---|
| Interstate, general freight | $750,000 | USDOT + MC Number |
| Intrastate, general freight (10,001+ lbs) | $750,000 | USDOT + PUCO (CPCN) |
| Intrastate, cargo vans/sprinters | $300,000 | USDOT + PUCO (CPCN) |
| Household goods | $750,000 | USDOT + PUCO + Tariff filing |
| Hazmat (any) | $1,000,000+ | USDOT + MC/PUCO + Special permits |
Important Ohio Notes
- PUCO requires a Form E filing from your insurer (proof of insurance sent directly)
- Interstate carriers need BMC-91X filing with FMCSA plus MCS-90 endorsement
- Most Ohio shippers require $1,000,000 CSL regardless of legal minimums
- Workers' Comp is mandatory under Ohio Revised Code
PUCO, FMCSA, Form E, BMC-91X - sound like alphabet soup? That's what we're here for. We know exactly what Ohio requires and we file everything within minutes of binding.

Ohio Trucking Insurance Questions
How much does Ohio trucking insurance cost?
For new authorities in Ohio, expect $7,000-$16,000/year for a single truck with $750K liability. Ohio rates are among the most competitive in the country. Your actual rate depends on experience, driving record, equipment, and cargo type.
Do I need PUCO authority if I only haul within Ohio?
Yes - if you're a for-hire carrier hauling point-to-point within Ohio, you need a CPCN (Certificate of Public Convenience and Necessity) from PUCO. Private carriers and interstate-only operations are exempt. We'll help you figure out which category you fall into.
Can RMS file my Form E with PUCO?
Absolutely. When we bind your policy, we file your Form E electronically with PUCO and your BMC-91X with FMCSA. Both filings happen within minutes - not days.
I'm running I-75 between Ohio and Michigan. What do I need?
Since you're crossing state lines, you need interstate authority (USDOT + MC number) with a minimum $750,000 liability. No PUCO needed for interstate work. We'll get you set up with the right coverage for that corridor.
What happens if my insurance lapses in Ohio?
PUCO will suspend your intrastate authority until updated proof is filed. FMCSA will revoke your interstate authority. Either way, you can't legally haul. We send renewal reminders well in advance so this never happens.
